چکیده

We use the grid of models described in paper I to analyse those millisecond pulsar binaries whose secondaries have been studied optically. In particular, we find cooling ages for these binary systems that range from < 1Gyr to ∼ 15Gyr. Comparison of cooling ages and characteristic spin down ages allows us to constrain the initial spin periods and spin-up histories for individual systems, showing that at least some millisecond pulsars had sub-Eddington accretion rates and long magnetic field decay times.

Discovery of a High-latitude Accreting Millisecond Pulsar in an Ultracompact Binary

We have identified the third known accretion-powered millisecond pulsar, XTE J0929−314, with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. The source is a faint, high–Galactic-latitude X-ray transient in the Galactic bulge (d & 9 kpc) that was in outburst during 2002 April–June. The 185 Hz (5.4 ms) pulsation had a fractional rms amplitude of 3–7% and was generally broad and sinusoidal, although occasionally...

GMRT Discovery of A Millisecond Pulsar in a Very Eccentric Binary System

We report the discovery of the binary millisecond pulsar J0514−4002A, which is the first known pulsar in the globular cluster NGC 1851 and the first pulsar discovered using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The pulsar has a rotational period of 4.99ms, an orbital period of 18.8 days, and the most eccentric pulsar orbit yet measured (e = 0.89). The companion has a minimum mass of 0.9M⊙...

Twenty Years of Searching for (and Finding) Globular Cluster Pulsars

Globular clusters produce orders of magnitude more millisecond pulsars per unit mass than the Galactic disk. Since the first cluster pulsar was uncovered twenty years ago, at least 138 have been identified – most of which are binary millisecond pulsars. Because of their origins involving stellar encounters, many of these systems are exotic objects that would never be observed in the Galactic di...

Neutron Star Mass Measurements. I. Radio Pulsars

There are now about fifty known radio pulsars in binary systems, including at least five in double neutron star binaries. In some cases, the stellar masses can be directly determined from measurements of relativistic orbital effects. In others, only an indirect or statistical estimate of the masses is possible. We review the general problem of mass measurement in radio pulsar binaries, and crit...
